Our mission is to help bridge the gap between a person’s dependence on outside resources and their own ability to meet basic needs for themselves and their families. Although the provision of food and financial assistance can temporarily ease emergent need, it does not address the long term success of an individual.
Financial stability is a critical step in achieving independence. We require anyone seeking financial assistance to attend a Living Basics Class (LBC) before further financial assistance will be considered. Currently, we offer classes in Budgeting, Needs vs. Wants, Pitfalls of Credit, and Goal Setting. Due to the quality content of our curriculum, our volunteer instructors also teach these classes to persons seeking assistance at PATH (Positive Affirmation Through Helping), our partner agency in York.
We would like to continue to expand our curriculum to include topics related to other basic needs, such as nutrition basics, healthy eating, and cooking. We welcome input from individuals with expertise to assist us in the expansion of our Living Basics Class offerings.
We are fortunate to have Tri-District Adult Education and SC Works sites in our service area. We work with both organizations, promote their services, and encourage our clients to participate. We also provide opportunities for clients to learn more about each organization by hosting representatives at our location.
Tri-District Adult Education offers classes that prepare students for the high school equivalency exam (GED) as well as classes focused on improving skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. All classes integrate academic skills and workplace skills, providing a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students to be college and career ready. SC Works offers career counseling, free access to computers, workshops, training opportunities and connections to the state’s workforce development database that includes thousands of positions listed all over the state.
